We started with one jar that finally worked
Bee & Bovine began at home in the Hudson Valley, with a family that had tried most of what the skincare aisle offers for dry, sensitive skin and was tired of reading ingredient lists longer than the jar. Beef tallow was the thing that worked. We rendered it ourselves, kept the recipe short, and started handing jars to friends. That turned into a farmers market table, and then into this.
Why tallow
Tallow is rendered beef fat, and its makeup is unusually close to the oils your skin already produces. That's the whole reason it works: it absorbs instead of sitting on top, it softens dry skin without a long list of stabilizers, and a small amount goes a long way. People used it for centuries before it was replaced by cheaper, shelf-stable synthetics. We think that was a step backward.
What goes in the jar
Grass-fed beef tallow, rendered and strained until it's clean and white. Beeswax where a product needs to hold its shape. Organic lavender or rosemary essential oil if you want a scent, and nothing if you don't. Every jar is three or four ingredients, made in small batches by hand, and packed in amber glass so it stays fresh.
What we won't do
No fillers, no fragrance oils, no preservatives, no water. We won't add an ingredient that isn't doing a job, and we won't make claims a cosmetic isn't allowed to make. Our products moisturize and soften skin. That's what they're for, and they're good at it.
